...who thinks Mazda's interior designers goofed on the Mazda 3? To me, the infotainment screen looks like it's an extreme afterthought.

Reminds me of BMW's dash

Definitely looks like an "ohshit" moment.
Just so out of place...

It's the newest trend. BMW, Mercedes, and Audi are all doing it. Get used to it, I don't think it's going to go away for a few years

Yes, you are.

while it does look like an add-on , I think it's a good use of unused space . it doesn't dominate the center stack like some do .

But everyone is doing the tacked-on-ipad look right now.

Everybody is right that infotainment systems are ugly and date a car horribly after ~4 years. However pretending like it isn't there and slapping on a aftermarket looking thing is a weird solution, especially if it is not actually removable/upgradable. Maybe they should just give up and put a iPad doc on there.

Nope, not the only one.
The stick on iPad infotainment display is trashy and cheap, for all the crap MFT has at least that cluster looks more premium.
Also, their HUD implementation is trashy and cheap. Instead of baking the cost into a pricey windshield, they do what anyone can do with a 150 dollar aftermarket kit. Oh bravo Mazda, that was awesome and totally required.

I don't think it looks that bad. I actually like the way it looks in the CLA.
Hopefully we can have update able systems soon. Run iOS or Android, keep them up to date.

Came here to say this

It's the trend.
The rest of the interior looks great, though.

Test drove a new 3 a few weeks ago. Though the screen isn't integrated into the dash, it looks better in the flesh than in photos.

I also came here to say this, but I will include this as well. Who needs a carefully thought out and crafted center stack when you can just have a tablet.

With the screen it looks OK. I saw one with just a head unit and it looks like they tossed a radio on the dash and called it a day.

Agreed, it doesn't look bad. I'm pretty sure its not removable/upgradable though which it could easily be with this style of design.
